The Tour Down Under catches the eye of cycling fans internationally and thousands of people journey to Adelaide every year to watch the spectacle. However, sport isn’t really our forte, as we much prefer to eat our body weight in food rather than bench press it. What we do love is delicious, local food, which we were excited to find in abundance at the Tour Down Under Village in Victoria Square.
Coal Cellar + Grill has a stall that reflects the Modern Australian dishes served at it’s nearby mother restaurant in the Hilton Hotel. The stall sells delicacies like gourmet burgers, hot dogs and beef brisket rolls that are sure to satisfy any meat cravings. As wonderful as gourmet food is, sometimes you just can’t go past an amazing fried chip. The Coal Cellar + Grill stall are currently selling some of the best chips and wedges we’ve eaten in a while, and we definitely recommend snacking on these bad boys as you meander through the Village.
Kerou&Co is a small french specialties cafe in Thebarton that are selling freshly made sweet and savoury crepes in the Tour Village. Siblings Abel and Yael Kerou started their business with the aim to provide Adelaide with a wider scope of french cuisine other than the standard croissants and baguettes. Their cute little crepe stall is the perfect place to pick up a quick and yummy ham and cheese crepe for lunch, or treat yoself and devour one of their delicious dessert crepes oozing with Nutella.
All Fired Up Pizzas are no strangers to the festival and pop-up scene, as these guys have been doing the rounds since the beginning of the food truck era. They’ve been around so long for a reason though, these guys can pull a great pizza out the back of a truck. Our personal favourite is the meatlovers, a great combo of pepperoni, shaved ham, bacon, onion and mozzarella on a saucy bbq base.
Another regular on the food truck (or bike) scene are Veggie Velo, arguably Adelaide’s favourite moving vegetarian food destination. While their menu isn’t large, the food they do serve is right on point and has been perfected by their three years of operating. Serving a few different veggie-packed burgers and a salad option, don’t think because it’s vegetarian this will be a light meal. Each menu item is packed full of delicious fillings like quinoa patties, grilled mushrooms, haloumi, alfalfa, beetroot and comes with a choice of sauces.
If it’s a coffee fix you’re after, head no further than Saint Espresso. Making fresh brews made to order, these guys will give you the extra energy you need to keep riding. As well as coffee, Saint Espresso offer a number of homey dishes the owners are proud to say come from their own kitchens. Think fresh green salads filled with summery ingredients like lettuce, fennel and orange, chilled pasta salads with homemade olive oil and what seemed like Italian toasted quesadillas.
You may have visited 48 Flavours at their Gouger St home, and now you can enjoy their refreshing ice-cream at the Tour Village. While unfortunately not selling 48 individual flavours at their little ice-cream cart, (how would they fit that many anyway?) they do however sell a small selection of refreshing ice creams packed full of flavour. 48 Flavours handmade all their ice-cream with ingredients found next door in the Central Markets, so you can always expect new and exciting flavours to try!
