In sunny Australia, it’s time to say goodbye to bad tan lines and salt-ridden curls, and hello to thick coats and warm knitted scarves. Winter is coming, and with it comes the David Jones Autumn/Winter ’18 Collection.
Throughout the warmer months of women’s fashion we’ve been wearing fun prints, flirty hemlines, and ruffled everything. But now, it’s time to hang up your straw hat. Summer style encompassed the fun and frivolity of the warmer seasons, but as things cool down it’s time for a more mature wardrobe to take centre stage.
If spring and summer fashion represents the playfulness of girlhood, then autumn and winter represent the intricacy of womanhood.
Boasting femininity and class at the David Jones A/W ’18 runway.
Every woman is represented in David Jones’ latest collection. From neat feminine silhouettes to strong military-inspired suiting, A/W style represents women who are both delicate and strong.
This A/W season brings with it tailored blazers and herringbone coats, representing a sophisticated modern woman. The Jigsaw grey marle coat in particular deserves to be shortlisted for your new winter investment, for the flattering sleeve length alone. Floral skirts and fine knits gave a feminine touch to the A/W collection, but khaki green, heeled black boots, and studded accessories added a masculine edge.
The Victorian influences and ladylike silhouettes were strong in this collection, but it wasn’t all dainty lace and nipped-in waists. Maryjane shoes and pink lace were toughened up by black fur (faux, of course). Similarly, stiletto boots and gentle fabrics softened shoulder-padded blazers and slouchy trousers.
This is a boss lady look if ever we saw one!
70’s revival was also a key trend for the night. Floaty fabrics and patchwork denim gave a nod to the era without going overboard and, yes, there were clogs on the runway. The accessory of the night was the oversized purple sunglasses from Chloé, lending some serious 70’s hippy vibes to some of the night’s feminine looks.
One of our favourite outfits was the versatile white and grey body suit from Atoir, paired expertly with the ever-flattering Viktoria + Woods white gathered-waist culottes. The end result is an outfit that will transition from the office to a dinner date to drinks with the girls.
The fabrics and detailing are what really make this collection. We have our eyes on the rippling silk maxi dress from Jac + Jack, and the worn leather jacket from Cooper that it was paired with. And do yourself a favour and check out the so-soft-you-want-to-bury-your-face-in-them knits from Ralph Lauren and Rebecca Vallance this season. Just a cautionary note, they’ll make you want to stay in with a good book and a cup of tea rather than head out for Friday night drinks. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Another highlight of the collection was the refined KitX black tails jacket. KitX presents the best in sustainable fashion, and this jacket is at once refreshingly modern and timelessly chic. Whether you wear it wish the dotty KitX dress it was paired with, or team it with black cigarette pants for work, it’s a true wardrobe staple.
Overall, the women’s fashion collection presented an A/W style that represents the full spectrum of female fashion, mashed up and reworked into whatever you want it to be. Whether you’re into studded leather, Victorian-era blouses, or both at once, this collection is all about making it your own.

And as for men’s fashion? Things are certainly stepping up in men’s style this season, with tailoring and European influences prominent. Sharp shirts and elegant blazers were given the Australian touch by being paired with chinos and boots. This resulted in a relaxed yet structured take on suiting in 2018.
Highlights from the men’s collection included a neat burgundy vest from Politix and a sturdy Jack London boot, both of which can work for all occasions. There was also a surprisingly wearable khaki leather jacket from Jack London, guaranteed to turn heads. For those who are more into sporty over suited, the Tommy Hilfiger red windbreaker coat with the blue/blue checked shirt provides the perfect ensemble.
As with the women’s fashion, men’s A/W ’18 style is all about reworking items in different ways to suit your own individual style. You do you!
