The Gilles St Markets aka. Adelaide’s biggest and most established market are now running every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, just in time for Spring! While the weather might not be warming up just yet, it’s still the perfect time to start planning your Spring/Summer wardrobe. We went along to the market and found ten current trends you can pick up for under $100 at the Gilles St Markets.
1. Wayne Cooper Leather Fringe Skirt $30
The boho trend isn’t going anywhere this summer, and this leather-fringed skirt takes it to a sleek, sophisticated level. We found this gem under a gazebo where housemates Tamika, Claire, Steph and Olivia were selling all their unwanted clothes.
2. White Closet Cut-Out Jacket $79
The ‘cold shoulder’ look is the best way to make a statement but still keep quite warm. By sporting stylish cut-outs at the shoulder, you can cover the rest of your torso while still looking fab on those evenings where Spring turns a little chilly. Stall-owner Sylvia Cutillo comes to Gilles St every market to sell, but doesn’t yet have an online shop or Instagram; head down here next market to find her.
3. Supa Sundays Reflective Glasses $25
Supa Sundays have been regulars at Gilles St for as long as we can remember. Their stall is a popular attraction as they offer a wide variety of statement sunnies at only $25, a clearance outlet for their regular online shop. Mirror sunglasses have been seen all over the runway and for $25 are an easy investment in your summer wardrobe.
Tip: if you’re like us and lose sunglasses faster than Shannon Noll lost the 2006 Australian Idol Championship, stock up and buy a few extra for festival season.
4. Medallion Chokers $45-60
Going back to the boho trend we mentioned before, nothing completes a 70’s-inspired outfit like a statement choker. Indie Soul have a whole range, from delicate little styles to full-on works of art that you could probably knock someone out with.
5. Double Denim $70
You know those big brands like Lee, Wrangler and Levi’s that we pay so much for at stores like General Pants? Guess what, one of Adelaide’s denim wholesalers regularly comes to Gilles St to clear out brand-new excess stock. Here you can grab one denim item for $40, two for $70 and three for $90. Double denim has been creeping back into magazine spreads, a tribute to one of the greatest couples of all time, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. Layering loads of denim has never been more acceptable, or affordable.
6. Bucket Bag $5
Seen on off-duty models everywhere, this is another 70s trend that you can easily throw on and run out the door with for an instant outfit pick-me-up. The ladies who run this stall have collected over 65 different styles of bags, jewelry and clothes from Bali and are bringing that little touch of Indonesia to Gilles St. With items starting at $5, how could you not?
7. Nicholas Bonded Midi Skirt $80
Sometimes the gems you find at Gilles St are exactly like the ones you’ve been fighting over people with on Facebook Buy/Sell groups. This Nicholas skirt is just that, with a flattering, structured body that would look perfect paired with a casual white tee and a pina colada. Tahlia Stanley is the owner of this stall, and regularly visits Gilles St to sell the stacks of old clothes she’s accumulated by working at labels like American Apparel, Ted Baker and Ralph Lauren.
8. Dainty Jewelry $5-6
This crazy-cool accessories store holds trends of all shapes and sizes, from the easy-to-wear to the extreme. Most importantly, i.m_not_you have a whole range of dainty jewelry, including rings for $5 and bracelets for $6. Buy one or two and wear them as small touches of metal, or stack ‘em up, à la Kylie Jenner.
9. Layering Shorts and Skirts $35
Layering is big right now, whether it be tying a jacket around your waist and throwing another over your shoulders, or wearing a t-shirt under a spaghetti-strap dress. House of Grace made this trend super easy for you, by pairing a skirt and shorts in the one item of clothing. You can pick this winner up at Gilles St for a measly $35, cheaper than buying either a skirt or shorts on its own!
10. Off-shoulder Top $35
Spotted Labels are another regular on the Gilles St circuit. Stocking only Australian designers, we found this cute off-the-shoulder top here for only $35. This trend is not to be confused with the ‘cold-shoulder’ trend, as rather than just having shoulder cut-outs, this requires you to go bare from shoulder to shoulder (the scandal!). A big thing to note this season is shoulders are the new cleavage, so worry not about the neckline and focus on the subtle sexiness of bare shoulders (unless you’re Kim K of course).
