Last night, we were treated to an evening of astoundingly fresh pizzas, courtesy of iconic Adelaide pizzeria Marcellina and in celebration of their upcoming 50th birthday. On Monday the 5th of June – the day of their big five-oh – they will be offering all of us lucky Adelaidians 80c pizzas all day. The idea was inspired by the brand’s rich history here in SA; back in the sixties, their pizzas were priced at just 80c each.
As last night’s celebratory event commenced, we wandered into Marcellina’s original Adelaide restaurant and felt the warmth of 50 years of pizza-making passion. Very few restaurants have remained in the same location since their inception, but Marcellina has. Their Hindley street restaurant has stood strong for half a century, continuously adapting to the changing city around it.
At one stage, Marcellina had thirty delivery trucks operating out of just two stores. Now, the pizzeria has 12 stores across Adelaide offering both delicious takeaway and cosy dine-in spaces. When we visited, the original store had been transformed into a long-table, pizza-making dinner extravaganza.
We used the freshest of local ingredients to create our own pizzas in traditional Marcellina style. In between grazing on local produce and sipping a negroni or two, we crafted our own unique pizzas before the experts took them away for cooking. The end result was the freshest, juiciest pizza you can imagine; typical of all of Marcellina’s pizzas.
We would highly recommend picking up a pizza here any day of the week, but be sure to head to Marcellina this Monday the 5th of June 2017. You can score yourself a ludicrously cheap feed from the friendly staff, made from only the freshest local produce. Buon appetito!
[As of 2020, Marcellina still has 12 stores open around Adelaide and host cooking classes at their Glenunga store.]
