Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would know brown lips are in and coloured lips are out. To be more specific, matte brown shades are the lipstick of choice, and Tarte Cosmetics have just released ‘Naughty Nudes’, a whole new range of trendy shades that perfectly meet this brief.
The range comes in two variations: Lippie Lingerie Matte Tint, which are moisturising crayon-type lipsticks, and Creamy Matte Lip Paint, which are liquid-to-matte. Tarte Cosmetics answered all of our makeup prayers when they sent us the entire new range, and with so many new shades to play with we decided to wear only Tarte lipsticks for seven days!
Day 1
KRISTEN:
Monday I spent the entire day working on a uni assignment and rewarded myself in the evening by going to get $7 pizza at The Union Hotel. It was a pretty casual dinner, so I wore Lippie Lingerie in ‘Whisper’, which is a barely-there pink shade that offered me enough colour to make my lips exist, but not enough that people would notice I was wearing a lipstick.
MEL:
I painted my lips with Tarteist Lip Paint in ‘Rave’ on Monday for work, achieving quite a striking, somewhat edgy look. The purple tinge to this colour strays from conventional lip colours such as red and pink; however; it does so in a slightly less in-your-face way to, say, a bright, bold purple or blue. This lip has to be my favourite of the collection due to its undoubtedly unique colour – I certainly haven’t seen anything like it!
Day 2
KRISTEN:
On Tuesday the first half of my day was jam-packed with meetings and the second half was filled with uni. I wanted a bit more colour than Whisper for the meetings, but not as much pigment as a Lip Paint. Due to this I went with ‘Envy’, a deep berry colour that gilded on easily and I only had to reapply a few times throughout the day.
MEL:
Surprise, surprise, Tuesday was also jam-packed full of meetings for me, so I went with Tarte’s Lippie Lingerie Matte Lip Tint in the shade ‘Revealed’. Tarte’s lip tints are slowly becoming my life, purely because of their easy-to-use design and moisturising elements. No lip liner needed; these crayon-like lippies are a bit of a God-send in my eyes. Revealed is a darker shade of brown with distinct red undertones, yet is still neutral enough to wear with corporate or casual clothing. I paired it with my tailored, business-chic LBD from Review and silver jewellery!
Day 3
KRISTEN:
Woah, my face is super-close here! Wednesday was my mum’s 50th birthday so I spent that day up at Bird in Hand Winery drinking delicious drops and snacking on ridiculously-good food. Upon reflection I probably should have chosen one of the more berry-toned shades as I was drinking red wine and my lips ended up being a little stained. I chose ‘Pure’ however, because I felt I was very overdressed and I didn’t want to go a full block lip. Pure is a gorgeous, very neutral and sheer pink-beige shade that you can just throw on really quickly and have your lips moist with a hint of colour all day.
MEL:
On Wednesday I wore the Tarteist Lip Paint in ‘Choker’ to a Laphroaig paired whiskey tasting and dinner at Rob Roy Hotel. My outfit for the event was very tonal, featuring khaki green and nude, as were my freshly done nails in a matte grey! I found Choker came out a lighter brown on my lips – there was definitely some orange coming through – but this distinctly browny-orange colour complimented the khaki green ridiculously well. I have, unfortunately, been beginning to find these Tarteist lips can dry out your lips a little, particularly after reapplication (as most liquid-to-matte lips will do). Next time I’ll be sure to moisturise with lip balm first!
Day 4
KRISTEN:
Please excuse my terrible camera quality, I’m holding out for the iPhone 7. My selfies will get better then, I promise! Today was a day full of meetings and travel to Melbourne for Fashion Week, so I again went for a nourishing Lippie Lingerie in Envy. As I was rushing around doing things all day, I wanted a nude shade that could be removed quite easily when required, but was also easy to put back on in a hurry.
MEL:
You can barely tell the difference between the lipsticks I’m wearing in my past few photos, but I do swear it’s a different shade! Thursday I spent designing my very own quality leather tote bag with Mon Purse in Myer Centre Adelaide, followed by a new menu launch at Oporto (yummo). Due to minor chapping from not moisturising my lips from the day before, I went for one of the creamy Lippie Lingeries in colour ‘Undressed’. Undressed bore pinkish undertones, and I found this lipstick to have been the closest to my natural lip colour (therefore, appropriately named), which meant I could wear this one anywhere and with essentially anything.
Day 5
KRISTEN:
My outfit for the launch of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week involved a giant blue skirt, so I wanted to keep my lips pretty neutral in fear of overdoing it. I reverted back to Lippie Lingerie in Pure again, as the real neutral-brown shade with slight pink undertones really compliments my skin tone and gives my lips just the right amount of colour.
MEL:
I worked on the website during the day Friday, with my bartending shift at Adelaide’s newest club/bar Big Window during the night. I wore Lippie Lingerie in ‘Envy’ quite literally because it was the first one I picked out of my makeup bag that I hadn’t worn yet… not for really any other reason! I did now decide, however, that this one was closer to my natural lip than Undressed.
Day 6
KRISTEN:
Saturday night’s edition of MSFW included an awesome ‘rags to runway’ show at Cherry Bar. I wore a baby pink dress and black boots, so I could afford to go a little more statement with my lips tonight. My favourite of the Lip Paints would have to be ‘Rave’, as it’s this super-cool grey/brown tone that manages to be neutral but standout at the same time.
MEL:
Saturday was spent celebrating my one year anniversary with my partner at the Botanic Gardens (the place where we had our first “date”… ugh so gross/cute). We indulged in a tasting course at the the Botanic Gardens fine dining restaurant on one of the best tables in the house overlooking the lake, so it was truly a special day! Since I was prepared to eat and drink a lot, I made sure to wear the muted Lippie Lingerie in ‘Pure’; one which resembled my natural lip colour but with stronger brown undertones rather than pink.
Day 7
KRISTEN:
Sunday night brought quite a colourful outfit, so I went with Lip Paint in ‘Choker’ to tone it down a bit. Choker is a real beige-brown shade with warm orange undertones that I hoped would brighten up my pale, pasty winter skin a bit.
MEL:
On Sunday I went for a bold finale with Tarte’s Lip Paint in ‘Grunge’! Absolutely love this colour. I went quite heavy on the makeup despite wearing an entirely light nude TY-LR pantsuit for the Melbourne Spring Fashion Week Emerging Collective and RMIT Runway, so I was super worried it would be a weird imbalance of light and dark tones. I think I managed to pull it off though!
