Situated in the vibrant Entertainment Quarter and looking over the scenic Centennial Parklands is where you’ll find Masala Kitchen Sydney. Serving up a colourful variety of Indian food alongside a thorough gin list, you’re guaranteed a hearty meal complemented by a tasty tipple.
The space is bright, airy and has a large terrace area that’s perfect for enjoying some autumn sun. Inside the decor is modern and bold, making it the perfect setting for a fun meal amongst friends.
As with any Indian restaurant, the menu is designed for sharing. We started with two of the Bites to begin with, the kale chaat and the pin wheel samosas. Both of these totally took us by surprise when they came out, as they were not what we expected, but in the best way possible. The kale chaat was a beautiful mess of boiled potatoes topped with crispy kale fritters, drizzled with spiced yoghurt and coriander mint relish and sprinkled with pomegranate arils. It was creamy, crunchy and overall entirely delicious, with just a hint of spice to back it all up. The pinwheel samosas were like flat fried patties, made from a mashed mix of potatoes, peas, cumin seeds, garam masala, tamarind chutney and spiced yoghurt. Crispy on the outside and dense and delicious on the inside, they were another winner.
From the Mains to Share we opted for the butter chicken (the menu claimed it was the best, so we simply had to try), and the dahl makhni, with some sides of rice and garlic naan. All we really have to say here is wow. The butter chicken was creamy and rich, with the thick sauce really bringing out the tender flavours of the chicken pieces floating throughout. The dahl was moreish enough to rival that of the famous recipe London’s Dishoom is known for, and if we could eat that every day for the rest of our lives, we’d be happy veggie girls indeed.
The servings were large enough for us to both have some leftovers to take for lunch the next day, so you definitely get bang for your buck here. Do yourself a favour and get down to check out Masala Kitchen in Sydney, you’ll be leaving with a full stomach and a full heart.
