Just like that time Lonely Planet put us in their 2014 Top 10 Cities of the World, or that other time Ben Folds dedicated a song to us, the city of Adelaide has made a name for itself yet again.
Coming in 29th place, Adelaide has made the Top 30 Places to Go in 2015 according to internationally recognised and praised newspaper, The New York Times. Adelaide is in fact, the only Australian city to have made it on the list! Yes that’s right, no mention of Sydney or Melbourne… Well if this isn’t an achievement, we don’t know what is.
Similar to Lonely Planet’s description of Adelaide, The New York Times pinpoints Adelaide’s “energetic arts scene,” mentioning festivals such as WOMADelaide, SALA, Adelaide Festival, and the biennial Adelaide Film Festival.
The article also recognises a “robust dining scene,” making mention of popular local restaurants such as Hill of Grace and Sean’s Kitchen, whilst also praising the small bar and cafe scene. New small bar, Maybe Mae, and cafe, La Moka, score mentions as part of a “renewed West End precinct.”
Finishing off with a couple of sentences about the dynamic artistry surrounding Adelaidian culture, you could say New York Times is giving Adelaide a bit of a virtual high five for the recent changes we’ve been making to our city. We’re growing and improving, and we’re seeing results.
Being quite a small city known for living in the shadows of its east-coast counterparts, Adelaide definitely deserves a bit of international recognition. We can only wait to see what the future holds for us!
