Sam’s June Gig Guide

The Rubens
The Rubens play at HQ on Friday the 17th of June.

After a massive May I think we all need a bit of a slow start to the month of June in 2016… and luckily we’ll get a little bit of a rest early in the month before it all kicks off in the second week. This month our fair city will be graced by the likes of DMAs, Digitalism, The Rubens, Jungle Giants and Elizabeth Rose. Use this early reprieve wisely, folks, because the mid-month cluster will have you dancing your lovely little selves into oblivion.

This coming Friday 3rd at Fat Controller we’ll be treated to DMAs who, with their intriguing brand of UK-esque punk/indie/pop fun, will be playing to a full house after selling out almost their entire national tour months in advance. To you lucky punters with tickets: get crazy; this one’s going to be massive!

Easing us into the month, on the other hand, is country-folk singer songwriter Sam Brittain who’ll be serenading The Gov on Saturday June 4th. His third album ‘Signal Lights’ is set for release just the day before – Adelaide being the opening gig of the tour for Brittain. Having made a name for himself supporting the likes of Passenger, Matt Corby and Matt McHugh of The Beautiful Girls, Brittain returns from Europe and the UK to give us his biggest headline tour yet. This is definitely one to see if you’re into country music or folk – or both!

Some of the oldies might be getting rowdy as Thebby Theatre plays host to Aussie legends Air Supply on the 7th on their 40th Anniversary Tour! With a string of hits throughout the late 70s, early 80s and 90s, Air Supply has been one of Australia’s most successful musical exports.

Things really kick off in June when Digitalism brings its electro-rock madness to Fat Controller on the 9th. Touring on the back of their latest album, ‘Mirage’, the German duo is set to absolutely rock the socks off the masses. This is certainly one you do not want to miss; it’s the first time they’ve toured the country since 2013!

LA’s hottest musical adoptee, Sydney producer Anna Lunoe will be driving fans at Fat Controller crazy on Friday 10th. She’s been ripping the live music scene apart in the States over the past 18 months with performances at Coachella and collabs with the likes of What So Not and Flume.

The very same night kicks off two consecutive nights of rock at the Thebby with The Pink Floyd Experience rolling in on Friday 10th and both Northlane and In Heart’s Wake ripping the roof off on Saturday 11th. The Floyd Experience are rumoured to have a complete performance of the Dark Side Of The Moon album in store, and the boys from Northlane and In Heart’s Wake are set to blow the speakers with their heavy, thrashed-out, punk rock anthems the following night.

Friday 17th sees New South Wales’ finest young rockers The Rubens showcasing songs from their sophomore album ‘Hoops’ at HQ Complex on their Hold Me Back Tour. After a huge 2015, the ‘Hoops’ album track topping Triple J’s annual Hottest 100 Countdown, The Rubens return to string together their biggest headline shows to date. Limited tickets are still available for this unmissable show, so get in quick!

Australia’s favourite future soul sister Ngaiire is touring for the first time since 2013 in celebration of her forthcoming album ‘Blastoma’! She’ll be hitting the stage at Fat Controller on the 17th, giving punters a very tough choice indeed. On the back of some exciting festival slots—i.e. Glastonbury and Falls Festival—Ngaiire is well on her way to cementing herself as one of our most treasured, most unique artists.

The Jungle Giants

Another difficult decision faces Adelaidians on the 18th when both Jungle Giants and Elizabeth Rose sweep through town. The Brissy-native Jungle Giants will be rocking out at The Gov on their Together We Can Work Together Tour, whereas Elizabeth Rose will be charming adoring fans at Fat Controller on the back of the release of her debut LP ‘Intra’.

One of Aussie hip-hop’s favourite sons, Urthboy, heads back to Adelaide for a sold out show at Rocket Bar on 24th June. The Sydney rapper will be treating us to new and old, with songs from his fifth studio album; ‘The Past Beats Inside Me Like A Second Heartbeat’ has already seen a great deal of critical acclaim since its March release. Urthboy will be joined by up-and-comer and fellow Sydney-sider L-Fresh The Lion along with rising starlet Okenyo.

What better way to round out the month of June than with some psychedelic rock? King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard whip out their bag of tricks for a massive headline show at The Gov on Thursday 30th. The cult favourites from Melbourne have burst onto the scene, releasing a mammoth eight albums since 2012; their latest LP, ‘Nonagon Infinity’ being the most successful yet. Seamlessly transitioning from lo-fi, Unknown Mortal Orchestra-esque sounds to upbeat, Tame Impala-style tempos, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are quickly gaining a firm foothold amongst Australia’s alternative music elite.
