BRIEFS at Adelaide Cabaret Festival

There was a combination of flips, juggling, exotic dancing and more than the occasional butt-cheek, but that doesn’t even begin to summarise the glitz-filled hour we spent with Briefs.

The Adelaide Cabaret Festival has loads to offer this year, with a little something for everyone. Comedy, drama, and acrobatics are a few categories on this year’s hot-list, and the Briefs performance had all of that and a little bit more in their show ‘Close Encounters’, held at the Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent.

The uncensored cabaret routine which ran from June 9th-11th was full of fun and fascination right from the get go, leaving every audience member sitting wide-eyed in anticipation. Hosted by the glamourous ring master Fez Fa’anana, the boys showcased skill and physical strength in a theatrical and seductive way, whilst retaining the comical flair that was consistent throughout the show.

Clothes weren’t a necessary addition to this show and hey, we weren’t complaining. However, when the costumes came out, they took you away to the realm of 1950’s burlesque in a way that was kind of space-orientated, adding that modern twist.

Each of the 6 flirtatious members had their own quirky personalities and abilities, adding plenty of variety to the stage. One thing they all shared was the vivacious aura that created the lively disco-esque atmosphere, which had everyone involuntarily grooving in their seats.

Overall, this show was nothing we could anticipate as first-time goers, but we loved every minute. There is no doubt the Briefs boys have mastered the skill of evocative entertainment… boy-lesque at its best!
