Iconic British footwear designer Nicholas Kirkwood held his first ever London Fashion Week show during SS19 and ensured this was a show people wouldn’t forget.
Easily one of the best shows we attended during our hectic five-day schedule (if not the best), Kirkwood and his team created a totally immersive experience that reflected both the new collection and the current political scene.
Held at Ambika P3, we wandered through an industrial walkway littered with NK19 flyers and propaganda for the ‘Bureau of Conformity’, the fictional ministry hunting Kirkwood and his models ‘for crimes against conformity and for their progressive sense of style’. Floating holographs depicting some of the new collection lit the way.
Inside the warehouse-like space was filled with flashing multicoloured lights and a dystopian stage where the models were to walk. Rose McGowan opened the show, posing as a hacker and activist part of the NK19 resistance.
Models sauntered across the stage, interacting with elements like the computer, a fridge and a couch while wearing shoes that looked like they’d just walked their way back to London from the year 3019. Perspex detailing and fluorescent colours contrast with feminine pearl detailing and florals, creating a truly groundbreaking and original collection. Our favourite pair were the cloudy white ankle boots featuring fluorescent yellow detailing and perched upon contrasting black block heels with matching yellow interior.
Showcasing the functionality as well as the style of the shoes, a dancer performed an energetic routine to David Bowie‘s dreamy ‘Life On Mars’ as the final models made their way around the stage. To view the full show, head to our IGTV video here.
