Abstract, edgy and a little bit fun – introducing the newest single and music video from Adelaide blues-rock trio Rat Ta’Mango.
‘Don’t Mind’ is the band’s second release in recent months, and the last before they head back into the studio to work on their long-awaited second EP.
The video, directed by Corduroy Production’s co-founder Mickey Mason, features three wacky characters planning out and executing a heist, adorned with abstract masks and some very 90’s shirt-and-tie combinations.
Matching the fast pace of the song, we’re treated to a beautifully shot snatch ‘n’ grab gone wrong as the three characters eventually turn on each other à la the opening scene of Dark Knight.
The band’s signature car — an off-white 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300D named Brian — steals the show against the backdrop of some fabulous rural scenery.
With tracking shots reminiscent of True Detective and a musical backing track to meet the approval of the rock ‘n’ roll gods, this clip is like an oddly beautiful Ritchie-Tarantino lovechild.
Recorded at Hothouse Audio in Melbourne, ‘Don’t Mind’ strays from the Mangoes’ usual bluesy, sultry sound, resulting in a grittier, more up-tempo, almost Motorhead-esque track with an ear-melting guitar solo and a deliciously catchy chorus.
“We were listening to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Ty Segall and MC5 at the time and thought ‘why not write a fast one?’” said drummer, Daniel Duke.
The instantly recognisable vocals of frontman Paris Clark-Proud, with a little extra crunch, punch their way through intricate drumlines and etch themselves squarely and unapologetically in your brain.
This is not a tune — or video — you’ll forget in a hurry.
‘Don’t Mind’ will be available on Triple J Unearthed, Spotify and iTunes on Monday 25th of September, and for our eastern states friends, the boys are bringing their new tune to you at the end of September – so snap up a ticket!
