David Bowie fever is upon us at Adelaide Fringe Festival, with a number of shows using the superstar as thematic inspiration. Rebel is no different.
“I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.”
The crew from Highwire Entertainment has stuck to the words of our favourite androgynous enigma, producing a sixty-minute display of sheer musical talent with a side of circus and acrobatics.
On in Gluttony’s Wonderland Spiegeltent, Rebel is a live musical performance whose band members double up as circus acts. This is where the subjectivity might creep into it in the way of entertainment value. If you’ve seen a lot of circus and physical theatre, you might think this aspect of Rebel sometimes falls short. Certainly, there are many impressive feats within the acrobatics, with our aerialist especially breathtaking in her display of strength and fluidity, but there are a couple of spots that could be a touch stronger.
However, the musicians are utterly sensational in their arrangement of Bowie classics and could pass alone as a high-quality cover group. If you are even mildly interested in David Bowie, the tunes and theatrics will ensure you find this one worthwhile.
It’s also family friendly and its 6:30pm time slot means it’s a perfect way to kick off a fun night out at the Adelaide Fringe.
