Recently, we got the chance to shoot a playful editorial in Melbourne, combining high performance natural makeup from Tarte Cosmetics and quirky Melbourne-based clothing label Leonard St. to showcase some funky winter wearables and everyday looks for the coming season.
The ever lovely Bek Capagne of Tarte Cosmetics painted our faces for the day, achieving both natural and striking make-up looks to suit any occasion. We’re so envious of Bek’s endless Tarte collection, oh to be a makeup artist!
Mel’s first look was bold and bright; who says winter can’t be colourful? Red-on-red is not a common colour choice for Mel as she tends to prefer black-on-black wherever and whenever possible. However, this combination of red from Leonard St. offers a breath of fresh air from her usual outfits – she felt particularly feminine and joyful in this get-up!
The recently released Open Batwing Top features mid-length sleeves with a delicate split on the top and a high-sitting boat neckline. We love this style top for work or play; it’s incredibly versatile from the workplace to nightwear. Mel pairs it with a high-waisted, midi a-line skirt made of quality pleather. This skirt is so beautiful, unique and truly a statement piece to spice up any winter wardrobe.
Completing the look with a natural face made this bodacious outfit stand out even more. Bek complimented Mel’s fine features by using tones of peach, pale pink and nude. She managed to illuminate the skin and make Mel truly glow with the Tarte primer and clay-based foundation, covering up those tired lines and sunken under-eyes (the unfortunate result of a serious lack of sleep the night before)! The combination of complexion products felt practically weightless, unlike some foundations.
For the second Leonard St. look Mel chose a fabulous blue floral skirt with a button-up checked shirt. The skirt sits perfectly on the waist and is a comfortable pencil shape, sitting flattering but not too tight. Again, it brings a splash of colour to the winter wardrobe and would look great paired with a black turtle neck and stockings on those chilly days!
The button-up top is a wonderfully designed piece, made of a high quality, soft chiffony-type see-through material. It’s another Leonard St. garment we feel would make great corporate wear, yet worn with an edge, as the transparency of the material changes things up a bit (but make sure you wear it with a bra!). Leonard St. offers this gorgeous fabric design in a range of dresses, skirts and tops of various muted colours in their A/W16 collection.
Kristen adores Leonard St.’s quirky prints, and fell in love with the adorable, sleepy sloth Zeusophobia dress. The low-cut back and asymmetrical hemline adds shape to this loose and comfortable garment, and paired with the pastel purple Delphi cardigan makes for a cosy winter outfit.
The simple pocket detailing and classic rounded neckline gives the cardigan a 60s glamour feel, and being made from a cashmere blend means it’s super soft and warm.
To go with the moody colour scheme of the Zeusophobia dress Bek went with the deep maroon Frenemy Tarte Lip Paint and a soft smokey eye. Liquid-to-matte lipsticks are all the rage right now (do we even need to mention the Kylie Jenner Lip Kits), and the Tarteist Lip Paint range is extremely pigmented and manages to be moisturising while still drying to a flat matte. The Tarteist Contour Palette was used to define Kristen’s features and add a bit of colour to her cheeks so her skin tone wasn’t washed out against the dark lip.
Pairing the Minnow Top in navy and Rockafella Skirt in black together creates quite an understated but modern look. The high-neck crew top is perfect for people like Kristen with a small bust, and the simple zip pocket detailing breaks up the sea of dark material. The faux-leather skirt is unbelievably soft and falls in natural, elegant folds that adds texture to the outfit.
As this outfit was quite dark Bek decided on a more neutral makeup look. A matte brown smokey eye was created, with a light contour and highlight to give a fresh healthy glow and a natural lip.
You can find Leonard St. boutiques in Melbourne, Adelaide and online, and Tarte makeup is available through Sephora.
