The island of Thira, or as everyone calls it, Santorini, has long been on my wish list and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. When I think of Santorini, two things come to mind: a wave of white buildings with blue domed roof tops and a sea of water so blue and clear that you can see the ocean floor from 20 metres deep.
I spent 4 nights here and there were so many incredible views to see, places to eat and scenic activities to explore so I thought I’d put together a list of my top 5 favourite ‘to do’s’ if you’re planning on visiting this incredible place.
1. Santo Wines Winery
Santo Winery is a must for all you wine lovers. Sit, drink and nibble on a cheese platter overlooking a captivating view of Santorini. This was definitely a ‘damn life’s good’ moment for me.
2. Volcano hike
Take a short boat trip out to Erinia, which is the name of the small bay, and hike up this island made of black lava. You can literally feel the heat rising through the soil and the view from the top is truly spectacular.
3. Watch the Sunset at Lioyerma Lounge Café
Watching the sunset over the Santorini sea whilst drinking a mojito was definitely a trip highlight. Many people gather every night to watch the sun go down and I can see why; the vibrant hues of yellow to red contrasting the deep blue of the sea is something you just don’t witness back at home. The Sunset Lioyerma Lounge Café has great cocktails and food and there’s also a swimming pool if you’d prefer to swim and watch the sun go down.
4. Thira town
The gorgeous town of Thira has so many beautiful stores, cafes and restaurants to dine in. Here is also where you will find the famous blue domed church that you see in almost every post card of Santorini. I found the most quaint little bookshop here called Atlantis Books that I highly recommend you check out if you go.
5. Dinner at Rastoni
I had one of the best meals on my trip at Rastoni and there is no doubt this place tops any restaurant that promotes ‘a dinner with a view’. If you’re a seafood fan like I am, I highly recommend their salmon dish – it was divine. Also be sure to try their traditional baklava (pastry, honey and nuts) for dessert.
